Most maps are built to answer where. The better operational maps also answer whether the situation has changed enough to interrupt somebody. That difference sounds small, but it changes the entire interface.
A listening map should make silence useful. When nothing urgent is happening, the page should stay quiet, keep the latest context visible, and avoid pretending that every update deserves attention.
The pattern is simple: show the route, show the exceptions, and keep the long history close enough that a person can reconstruct a decision without opening six different systems.
